I Can’t Get Behind That!
Monday July 25th 2005, 2:44 pm

I know I’m way behind the curve, but I finally got William Shatner’s Has Been, and…

God, that last track. Shatner and Rollins, screaming about everything in modern society that drives them batty, all with the most driving drums I’ve heard in ages (drum kit and tympani? Yes!), both of them getting more and more indignant and worked up over global warming, student drivers and telemarketers (”It’s a computer!” screams Shatner, the rage dripping from his voice as Rollins yells “Make millions in minutes! Lose inches in hours!”

Please, give me an album with nothing but Shatner/Rollins duets. Ben Folds, make this happen. Please.

Tonight! Hot Cylon action!
Friday July 15th 2005, 1:42 pm

If you’re any kind of geek with basic cable, you owe it to yourself to watch Battlestar Galactica tonight. Put aside all of your fond memories of the feathered hair and suede jackets, forget about Starbuck being a chick; just watch the damn show. You will like it. I’ve been hooked since the mini a year and a half ago, and this is something that feels right. Bold themes, fucked-up (but likeable) characters, space battles.

Plus Edward James Olmos and hot Cyclon sex. Though probably not together.

Yet.

Homegrown Tomatoes…
Friday July 15th 2005, 11:15 am

If I’s to change this life I lead,
I’d be Johnny Tomato Seed,
`Cause I know what this country needs:
Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see.
When I die don’t bury me
In a box in a cemetary.
Out in the garden would be much better
I could be pushin’ up homegrown tomatoes…

Homegrown tomatoes homegrown tomatoes
What’d life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can’t buy
That’s true love & homegrown tomatoes

Our tomatoes haven’t come in yet, but every time I go out to water, I lean over the dirt and chant Grow, grow! Then I listen to Guy Clark and think about all the tomatoey goodness we’ll have as soon as those suckers pop up.

…and up pops the Queen…
Friday July 01st 2005, 11:30 am

I first heard Robert Palmer’s Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley a couple of years ago on a ski trip to Tahoe. Most of what I remember about that was a) Ken and I had a good run at Sugar Bowl, b) the other people in our cabin sucked and c) this album. Someone brought it, and I couldn’t believe it was Robert Palmer, he of the bombastic pop and walls of surly, vinyl-clad backup band babes. I know The Meters are doing most of the heavy lifting, but, dude, it’s enough to make up for all the crap he foisted on 80s radio. Do yourself and get a copy; the first three tracks just groove, man.
