Two Righteous Geeque Moments

Last week, I read a post on Making Light about Spin, a novel by Robert Charles Wilson. It sounded like a good book, and we were about to go on a long weekend snow trip, so why not? We were killing time at Borders until the traffic died down, so I snagged a copy, thinking I’d read a little bit of it when I wasn’t on the slopes.
I inhaled it. Started Friday afternoon and didn’t put it down until driving home Sunday when the sun was too low in the sky. It is a stunning novel, the kind that gives you a shot of Wow without any winking jackassery. I so dug it that I wrote Robert Charles Wilson an email saying as much.
And today, he wrote me back. (more…)
Good gravy…

…but that previous post sure sounded like a flashback, didn’t it? Next thing you know, I’ll be bitching about the poor working conditions in the video game industry.
But, seriously, Jason…we must dump Office. It’s a moral imperative.
Die, Office, Die!

As we know, that’s German for “The, Office, The,” and anything written in German can’t be bad.
I’ve had to use Office in my past two gigs, and I want to find the people responsible for Excel and Outlook 2000 and give them the business. Why do these programs suck so much? Why does Excel create a link for anything that starts with “www.” but throws up at anything else? Why does Outlook not give me an easy way to auto-fill an email address? Why in hell are we still using such shitty, shitty software?

…I finished the elephant story. Good God, it felt good to get that sucker off my shoulders. What next? Something new about the Singularity and missionaries, and then an orgy of revision. My goal is to have the elephant story and Making Numbers retooled and sent out by Memorial Day. Onward, baby!
Valentine’s Day…feh

This would make for a much better Valentine’s Day than all the chocolate hearts in the world.
Of course, I’d always settle for being SVUV (that’s Special Victim’s Unit Valentine).

While I think what The Compact’s actions are admirable, I also think that, when it comes to the underwear thing, they’re a bunch of pussies. I have skivvies from 1999 that I wear all the time. If your ass is so delicate that you need to swap out your undies every year, then suck it up, buy some quality underwear, and be happy.

I got up this morning to the sound of a police helicopter. I’m sure that means six weeks more of something that won’t be good.
Also, happy birthdays to Brent Spiner, Shakira and me. If you can’t make the party, you can celebrate by either reading James Joyce (b. 2/2/1882) or setting an Ayn Rand book on fire (forced into a world full of ingrates and collectivists on 2/2/1905).
