Restatement of Purpose
Tuesday March 28th 2006, 4:56 pm

This is something I do every now and then. It’s one thing to do something poetic and write out life goals and burn the paper and scatter the ashes to the four winds while a ten-piece Incan pipe band plays in the background, but who has time for that shit? Besides, the Internet has memory, and I want to remember this during the Dark Moments Of The Soul when I’m staring at a blank screen and wondering, “Jebus…who the hell am I kidding?”

So.

I will put in my hour of writing at lunch and my hour of editing at bedtime. That’s all the time I’ve got right now if I want to maintain my job, my health and my marriage. Besides, I work better under deadline pressure.

By May, I will have reworked “The Right People.” By June, “Tall in the Saddle.” And by July, “Making Numbers” (gratuitous sexuality my ass). And I will not retire those stories until they’re done.

I will finish the story with the working title of “Serving Mammon” and beat it into shape by the end of April.

I will work on the novel that started with “The Kite.”

I will allow myself thirty seconds of despair every other month (see the first point re: available time).

I will be on both “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” as a guest. And I’ll do it on the same goddamn night.

I will write what entertains and amuses me, though I’ll also listen to valid criticism and advice (see above point re: my ass).

Right. Back to work.

Where I stand on immigration reform
Monday March 27th 2006, 9:02 pm

I don’t give a good goddamn what Congress plans on doing about immigration reform unless their legislation a) bans Carlos Mencia to public access cable and b) gives his Comedy Central timeslot to Culture Clash.

Garden 2: The Diggening
Wednesday March 22nd 2006, 11:21 pm

Okay. A bunch of lovely seeds are on the way: rhubarb, cucumbers, carrots, sunflowers, basil, amaranth, sorghum and three kinds of tomatoes. The beds have been filled with vetch, rye and oats since October, so they should be filled with joy and nitrogen. On Monday morning, I harvest half of this stuff to make brown stuff for the composter, and next Sunday, after Danhole’s wedding, there will be planting. Oh, yes, there will.

And assuming everything blooms and goes right, everyone in the world will be getting free produce all summer long. And if that works? Then I’m planting wheat in the front yard next year. Wheat!

What would happen if you superimposed this map over this one?

They’re back! Rejoice!
Tuesday March 14th 2006, 4:06 pm

We had a client pitch this morning in San Dimas, and, on the way back, I convinced Sue and Jason to make a detour to Foster’s. They weren’t quite convinced that it was as great as I said, and I think I scared them a bit when the “Strawberry Donuts are here!” sign came into view. Their doubt melted away once they saw a lone strawberry donut sitting on the rack. Yeah, baby.

They’re now converts. And if we land this contract, I’m getting strawberry donuts for the entire office.

Splitting hairs with a chainsaw
Monday March 13th 2006, 10:38 am

The only thing funnier than geeks dissecting something is geeks bitching about that something (note: following this link will be comedy gold, but it will also contain spoilers about the season finale of Battlestar Galactica. It will also alter your body chemistry, cause your sweat glands to emit phermones that will make you sexually unappealing for at least a week, so use protection).

The season finale was excellent, because it did what it’s supposed to do: throw our heroes into a hopeless situation. The story is driven forward, stuff has changed, and the status quo is knocked out of whack. The downside? Nothing new until October, which means six months of geeks whining and getting anal about minutiae. Suck it up, geeks; you’ve still got reruns of Stargate.
